This bench started out as a 30-year-old dirty and weathered worn out piece of furniture. I can say that I did not think that the underlying wood would have so much character. Over the years, the top was covered in peeling varnish and began to warp from constant outdoor exposure.
After removing 1/4″ from the top surface, hand sanding the varnish from the sides, and repairing the base, we were left with a beautiful rustic piece of soft ambrosia maple. A non-toxic exterior oil finish of Penofin Verde completed the transformation and gave this worn-out bench a new lease on life.
Reclaimed and refurbished ambrosia maple bench
This surface used to be weatherd grey and covered in patches of peeling varnish. Now it is smooth, beautiful, and non-toxic.
The ambrosia beetle bores small holes in the trees and leaves behind a colored deposit that adds to the character of this piece.
The simple three piece design is classic and worth saving
